About BLAST Searches

A BLAST search (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) in the context of each representative protein was used to determine regions of protein similarity. As with the FASTA, the advantages of BLAST searches lie with its simplicity and efficiency as a tool for bioinformatics, which is particularly useful given the vastness of existing databses against which searches are run. By conducting a databse wide comparison for each homologue of varying species, the eEFK2 gene was shown to be highly conserved throughout.

The results for each representative proteinwere conducted through NCBI and are displayed in a graphical format within a table showing sequence identifiers for the hits with scoring data, as well as alignments for the sequence of interest alongside the hits received with corresponding BLAST scores for these.
